The idea for Arilloom came when I was hosting a special occasion at my home and my mother asked me to use the family heirloom tablecloth for our gathering. This heirloom, which is made of fragile material and cannot be machine washed, has been passed down to me from my mother, and her mother before her, and her grandmother and...well you get the idea. It’s anywhere from 150 -180 years old! Needless to say, I was scared to use such a delicate item in a household that is anything but delicate with two young boys. Bottom-line, I never used it. In fact, I’ve had it for 10 years saved in a drawer.
At that moment I felt inspired to change that reality. So many of my fondest memories during childhood involved watching my mom set the table for Sunday lunch, daily dinners, and special occasions. Her table was always charming and inviting, and it signified that my family and I would gather, eat, share stories, and make memories. Those moments left an indelible mark on me throughout my life - my identity - and it all came into realization from my mom’s simple request to mark our occasion with a family heirloom.
In this sense, Arilloom came from a singular moment - one that encompasses generations of experiences and occasions around the table with my family and friends. My wish is for families today to reaffirm these types of traditions and experiences, but also be able to enjoy their heirlooms without the anxiety of using them. From my desire to bring tradition, quality, and practicality together - Arilloom was born.
